From the backcountry scenery, from the harsh land, reddish and with branches wriggled by the drought, a figure emerges: brave and leathered men, fearless because of their own workmanship. The documentary “Cowboys” is about central themes of this sprawling inland empire, like drought, the regulation of the profession of the “vaqueiros” (cowboys) and the controversy about the “vaquejadas” (a local version of rodeo) that is threatening to change these men’s way of life forever.
